Furniture Trends 2021

The start of a new year is a great excuse to update your interior, and along with each season is a new and exciting installment of furniture trends. Whether you want to dive right in or just dip your toe in the water, there are plenty of avenues to explore to transform your space in the upcoming months. Here are the top furniture trends to look out for in 2020/2021.

Minimalism

The pared-back, minimal trend is showing no signs of slowing down. Clean and clutter-free spaces create a sanctuary away from the hectic modern world around us and create a beautiful aesthetic with a timeless appeal. When it comes to furniture, this means clean lines, no embellishments and simple, straightforward shapes.

Though it might conjure up images of sparse, monochrome spaces, the new minimal look is anything but cold. Add some warmth into your space by using natural materials like oak or ash wood and bring in earthy tones like terracotta, light taupe or even blush pink.

Vintage

With a greater focus on longer lasting furniture, vintage is also making a comeback. There are plenty of markets, stores and websites where you can find a huge selection of vintage pieces with styles available from every era. There are the stylized lines of art deco or the organic minimalism of mid-century. There are antique oak pieces designed to last a lifetime or the bold, out-there motifs of 70s decor.

Vintage is a truly all-encompassing trend that everyone can enjoy. It may be a bit of a labor of love to find the perfect vintage pieces to fit your home, but there’s a real thrill in finding a vintage gem and adding a bit of character into your home.

Chubby

For 2021, the design world will be embracing curves with the chubby design trend. Think soft, oversized forms and a round, whimsical aesthetic. At a time where all of us are spending more time at home, this trend is all about nostalgia and comfort.

Soft furnishings are the ideal place to explore the chubby trend, with upholstery lending itself perfectly to these cozy, squishy shapes. However, to try it out on a smaller scale, you could also opt for a side or coffee table with rounded edges and stout, chunky legs.

Multi-Functional

At a time where more and more people are living in smaller spaces, it’s no surprise that multi-functional furniture is gaining momentum. Examples might be a side table that doubles up as a stool, or a bed with concealed storage. It’s all about choosing items that fulfill multiple uses to reduce the amount we need to buy.

Though multi-functional has existed in some form for several decades, the latest multi-functional pieces are a direct response to the increase in working from home. They are objects that not only offer convenience but make our everyday lives just that little bit easier.
